Inspiration

por | | 0 comments

I've had a few questions about how I find inspiration, so I thought I'd take a stab at answering them here.

I really believe that inspiration can be found anywhere, especially when coming up with a vision for a special event. Things that I think about when I make these boards are:

1. What season is it?
2. What is the mood of the event? Is it formal, casual, or something in between? Is it grand or intimate? Sophisticated? Playful?
3. What is the location? Inside or out-of-doors? How can I play up regional/local elements? Does the architecture/scenery inspire me?
4. What single element can tie everything together? Is it a theme? A certain flower or fruit?
5. How can I stretch this idea? What is unexpected but fits perfectly with all the other aspects?

A note about color schemes: Sometimes I do have a palette in mind, and that's what I use to come up with the other elements of a board. Other times, I have all those other things in mind, and I pull images together that fit, and a color scheme emerges. While having your colors all picked out can focus an event and help pull everything together, I think it can also be limiting and too obvious. To avoid this, I try to make room for color families - so if I'm mostly working with celery green, I won't automatically abandon celadon or pine. I'll see if I can make them work with the rest of my vision.

So, that's it. I hope this is helpful for those of you planning your own events, and either way, I love to hear your ideas and try to pull them together in a cohesive board.

PS: Yep, I just use Adobe Photoshop to put these boards together. It's a little tricky if you haven't used it before, but play around and read the tutorials and you should get the hang of it.

My First Concert Tweets

por | | 0 comments

My First Concert TweetsUsually I'm struck by the beauty, insanity, ridiculousness, or _________ of the band and crowd when I go to a concert. I'm also usually scribbling these thoughts down on my arm, gum wrapper, paper cup, or other ill-intentioned notebook substitute...

Then along came Twitter that lets you tweet all sorts of unimportant drivel in real time...! This means no more deciphering my chicken scratch the next day! I gave tweeting a show a test run with our much anticipated Animal Collective experience in Boulder.

The carnage follows:
  1. Waiting for Animal Collective to take the stage. Enduring the Dead and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
  2. And some J Dilla redeems...
  3. Ballet dancer projection is pretty dope. And pretty fitting! Lovely!
  4. Shug has agreed to polyamory. But only with Avey and Panda Bear.
  5. My Girls are about to KILL.
  6. People are clapping, singing along, and dancing. Are these concert goers really hipsters?!
  7. Animal Collective just played the organ song off of Post...take me now, Lord.
  8. Um, Panda Bear is, like, a really good drummer.
  9. The sing-along continues. Feels like church camp. Except a lot cooler lyrics to sing along to.
  10. Finished already?!?
  11. Encore!
  12. Strawberry Jam is making a strong appearance. Unsolved Mystery is sounding pretty damn amazing right now.
  13. Over already:(
  14. My cilias' swan song is a fair price to pay for over two hours of Animal Collective live.

Veggie Burrito Wraps

por | | 0 comments

I am constantly searching for things that I can make ahead, freeze, and grab them to take to work with me in my lunch bag that is

1) easy
2) yummy after nuking in the microwave
3) relatively healthy

This recipe really fits the Bill. This base recipe is very easy to adapt to suit your own tastes. I wrapped each one in a paper towel and froze them in ziplock/foodsaver bags in groups of 5. I got 15 burritos from this recipe. Don't forget the sour cream and salsa, YUM!!!!

Veggie Burrito Wraps
Source: adapted from All Recipes

Ingredients
2 cups uncooked brown rice
4 cups water
olive oil
1 green pepper
1 onion
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans
2 (15.5 ounce) cans pinto beans
1 (10 ounce) can whole kernel corn (I used mexicorn)
1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green
chiles (a.k.a. Rotel tomatoes)
1 can low fat refried beans
16 (10 inch) flour tortillas
2 cups shredded pepperjack cheese

Directions:

1. Combine rice and water in a saucepan, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 35 to 40 minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat, and cool.

2. Place black beans and pinto beans into a colander or strainer, and rinse. Add corn and diced tomatoes with green chilies, and toss to mix.

3. In a large skillet, heat two turns of olive oil over medium high heat. Add onions, peppers and brown sugar, saute for 3-5 minutes or until caramelized. slowly add in the corn and tomato mixture and stir to heat thoroughly. add cheese and rice and stir until thoroughly heated and cheese is melted.

4. Divide the mixture evenly among the tortillas, starting with a layer of refried beans, and roll up. Wrap individually in paper towels, place into a large freezer bag, and freeze. Reheat as needed in the microwave for lunch or snacks.

http://shelleypascual.com | Book my buddy Evan rockin' the 1♥TO tee! ...and for the record...

1. The small vegetarian burrito I ate was actually $6.10.

2. Complete list of ingredients in my burrito: whole wheat tortilla + vegetarian ground round (faux meat) + rice + refried beans + cheese + salsa + guacamole + lettuce + tomatoes + green peppers + green onions + jalapenos + sour cream + burrito sauce + hot sauce

3. This vegetarian burrito was indeed satisfying/filling, but I can't say that it was the best burrito I ever had. Though all the ingredients tasted fresh, there was nothing particularly magical about this burrito.

❤ BIO-BURGER RECIPE
or VEGGIE BURGER RECIPE
or NUT PATE RECIPE
or VEGGIE DIP RECIPE
or VEGGIE BURRITO RECIPE
...you decide! ❤

* I n g r e d i e n t s *
— 2 cups Sprouted Sunflower Seeds (soaked in water for 24-48 hours, then strained)
— 1 cup Shelled Hemp Seeds
— 3 Carrots, roughly chopped
— 2 Garlic Cloves
— 1 bunch Dill, roughly torn into smaller pieces
— 1 bunch Collard Greens
— 3 stalks of Celery, roughly chopped
— Sea Salt (to taste)
— Lime Juice (to taste)

* P r e p a r a t i o n *
— 1) YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NEED to combine all of these ingredients into your food processor in STAGES, as otherwise you'll clog up the food processor like I did! Combine the sprouted sunflower seeds, shelled hemp seeds, chopped carrots, garlic cloves, dill, just the STEMS from the collard greens & the chopped celery stalks using a food processor. The one I use in this video along with some other ones I recommend are here: http://FOOD-PROCESSOR.life-regenerator.com

— 2) Add sea salt & lime juice to taste, and blend some more.

— 3) Scoop mixture into the collard green leaves, roll up into a "burrito," and enjoy! OR scoop mixture on top of collard green leaves and serve as an open-faced "burger" OR
serve mixture as a veggie dip alongside chopped vegetables OR
serve however you'd like...be creative!

* I n s p i r a t i o n *
— I encourage you to play with your food and be creative in the kitchen! It is OK to make mistakes! It is OK to not have everything turn out perfectly all the time! I actually am ALWAYS fiddling with food that I prepare like I do in this vid, it is just part of the process! I only said I was frustrated because I felt frustrated for you guys having to watch me having to fiddle...so I otherwise wasn't actually frustrated at all!

— So again, don't be afraid...play with your food while making new recipes and have fun!

YOU CAN DO THIS! :D

Love, Dan
